Rebuilding Gresley TK 1002 - Chapter 21

Summer 2020

After repairing the split panels, several hundred feet of half-round moulding was manufactured. This was cut to length, drilled, then pinned to the body side after two lines of sealant were applied to the back of the moulding to prevent water ingress behind the mouldings.

North side lower line of mouldings

John and Graham started fitting compartment windows on the north side. Using the pre-made and drilled mouldings (by Don), the window was held in place after applying a fillet of brown frame sealant. The original screws were used as far as possible to fix the retention mouldings in place.

John wrestles with another window

As July 2020 continued, the fitting of half round mouldings speeded up. After lining along the bottom edge, the top edge was started. This "collided" with the grab handles which made trying to keep it in a straight line rather difficult. The vertical pieces were fitted next - again the problem of door and grab handles made the job more difficult. Most of the initial batch of 200' was used up before the north side was even nearly finished, so production of another batch had to be started.

Half round mouldings on the north side

While the windows were being installed on the north side, more half-round mouldings were also fitted. By the end of August all of the mouldings for the north side were in place as you can see from the photo below. Once fitted, the mouldings were gold-sized in preparation for varnishing. From the photo you can also see that the solebar has been painted in grey undercoat.
