Sansovino photographed in LNER days, later acquiring the number 60053 after nationalisation. photo anon
Ex-LNER 4-6-2 class A3 No 60053 'Sansovino' on a down Manchester express about to enter Catesby Tunnel in May 1949.
This photo from the Warwickshire Railway Collection was originally attributed to 60035 "Windsor Lad", but
subsequently the following analysis was made by Martin Beckett (to whom many thanks!).
The engine number and its nameplate are not readable in the photograph but after we used image
enhancement software it can be seen that this engine is a right hand drive A3 and therefore cannot possibly be 60035
which was built with left hand drive. On the other hand, in 1949 60053 was a right hand drive engine and was not
converted to LHD until the mid-1950s. In addition the cabside number is faintly visible in the enhanced picture and it
is 60053 not 60035. These two points are clinching evidence that this loco is not 60035.
Tommy Knox also pointed out that the picture could still have a rarity value because it may well be the last photograph
ever taken of 60053 working on the GC section. Within days of the date of the 1949 photograph 60053 was transferred
from Leicester GC shed to Doncaster in exchange for another A3, and 60053 never returned to any GC line shed.
